Dayton & Montgomery County will be hosting a live demonstration of its mosquito surveillance program on Tuesday, May 14 at 9 a.m. in the field behind Wegerzyn MetroPark, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave.

Each year, this program provides the following services to Montgomery County:

• Traps mosquitoes and identifies species
• Conducts spraying in selected areas to reduce the mosquito population
• Educates the public about how they can reduce the mosquito population on their property
• Educates the public about how they can protect themselves from mosquito bites

Discharge of toxic effluents has contaminated groundwater which affects Public Health

Krebs Biochemicals has put public health at risk

Accusing the Krebs Biochemicals and Industries Limited (Krebs) located in Kasimkota mandal of violating statutory environmental laws and regulations, the Human Rights Forum (HRF) has demanded that the eco-clearnace issued to the company be rescinded with immediate effect.

A three-member team of HRF visited the area on Sunday and interacted with the residents from the villages of Gantavanipalem in Munagapaka mandal, Perantalapalem and Tegada, both in Kasimkota mandal.The team alleged that the Krebs was discharging toxic effluents into the local water bodies and the residents of several villages in the vicinity of the factory were suffering from various ailments.

“The residents told us that despite their repeated appeals, the company had been releasing toxic effluents into the water bodies since many years. The fallout of this malpractice is evident as residents in the three villages close to the factory have been suffering from air pollution, extreme stench and health issues. Thyroid and orthopaedic ailments and skin rashes have become a common occurrence in this area.

Residents of Gantavanipalem alleged that the groundwater in the area has been contaminated.

“The groundwater here is unfit for consumption. The borewells are yielding coloured water which the residents are using only for washing clothes. They are trekking several kilometres for fetching drinking water. Many cattle have also died from the exposure to pollutants. The villagers also claimed that the industry had released effluents into the Sarada River, a major water source for the area”.

Industrial emissions pose threat to public health

Pollutants releasing from various industrial units in Etcherla Assembly segment in the district are posing threat to public health. Many industrial units including pharmaceutical, chemical, pesticide and other manufacturing units are situated at Pydibhimavaram in Ranastalam mandal, Budumuru in Laver mandal and at Chilakapalem in Etcherla mandal in the district. AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) acquired 410 acres of land in Ranastalam to promote the industries.

Of the total land, 273 acres have been allotted to various chemical and pharmaceutical units. Aurobindo, Reddy's, Andhra Organics, LanTech, Saraka, NACL and other units are located along the NH-16 for 40 km length. Etcherla Assembly segment is located between sea shore and NH-16. Managements of various industries are releasing their effluents without treating them. A pipeline was constructed on the banks of a rivulet Kandivalasagedda to discharge industrial effluents into Bay of Bengal directly. But no management is treating its effluents before releasing them into the pipeline.

Due to leakages in pipeline, the pollutants affecting the soil and water. Both ground water sources, surface water resources and air is being polluted at Pydibhimavaram, Naruva, Sancham, Lova, Boyapalem, Akkayyapalem, Mentada, Budumuru, Devunipalavalasa, Chilakapalem, A.A.Valasa, Bantupalli and other villages across the segment. Industrial managements are influencing local village level people's representatives and community elders to get their support. Simultaneously they are also managing pollution control board (PCB) officials also. As a result, the PCB officials are unable to conduct frequent verifications at industrial units. Due to pollution of air, water and soil, the residents of Pydibhimavaram, Naruva, Sancham, Lova, Boyapalem, Akkayyapalem, Mentada, Budumuru, Devunipalavalasa, Chilakapalem, A A Valasa, Bantupalli and other villages across the segment are suffering from severe diseases like cancer, kidney problems, skin disorders and eye related ailments. K Venkata Raju, N Appanna, K Yellamma, K Nukamma, K Suramma of Sancham, Naruva, Lova villages died of cancer and kidney ailments due to pollution. "We have made complaints on pollution several times to officials concerned but no action is initiated," said D Parasuram, T Ramu, N Laxmi, K Suri, K Durgamma, I Prasada Rao and others of Sancham, Naruva, Pydibhimavaram villages to the The Hans India.

Department of public health to make school immunization rates public for first time

The Department of Public Health Commissioner issued a letter to all superintendents and school nurses informing them of this move.

DPH said it has been collecting data on immunization rates for decades now and recently, it was decided that information would be available for everyone to see.

As of April 24th of this year, close to 700 cases of measles have been nationally in 22 states, including Connecticut.

According to DPH, the number of kindergarteners being vaccinated for measles, mumps and rubella was at a high last year, but records show that number is trending lower.

Overturf’s class, Dance Fitness, is one of dozens of programs offered by Active Ottumwa, a partnership between the city of Ottumwa and the Prevention Research Center in the University of Iowa College of Public Health designed to get more Ottumwans moving. Working with numerous local organizations, Active Ottumwa promotes healthy lifestyles by creating and encouraging more research-tested physical activity opportunities for adults. Edith Parker, dean of the College of Public Health and director of the Prevention Research Center, says the program offers an array of activities every week to improve peoples’ health.
